Role Purpose
Aluminium is widely viewed as a key enabler for the Energy Transition and central to this is the future path for demand for primary and secondary metal. Stakeholders in the industry increasingly need to understand the key drivers for aluminium demand by end-use sector as well as the role of scrap in fulfilling the industry’s current and future metal requirements. This requires an understanding of current and future demand drivers and in-turn intensity of use, substitution, and the impact of Energy Transition on the demand for aluminium.
The Senior Analyst – Aluminium role is within the Metals and Mining Markets team.
The Senior Analyst – Aluminium will apply solid analytical capabilities and knowledge of aluminium demand to enhance Wood Mackenzie's analysis and services to customers.
In delivering this product, the Senior Analyst will develop a sophisticated understanding of implications for our clients’ interests, to provide frequent, thorough, and clear written analysis to defined publication schedules, and perceptive Insights providing innovative and original views on industry developments. The analyst will communicate regularly with clients, sharing our views and engaging in mutually beneficial dialogue.
Main Responsibilities
- Analyse and model bauxite and alumina flows and allocations.
- Maintain the database on these flows and allocations.
- Provide insightful market analysis on aluminium demand and supply for our short and long-term reports.
- Produce original market analysis with a culmination in client deliverables and industry thought leadership pieces.
- Monitor developments in the downstream aluminium sector providing analysis on industry developments.
- Help to shape our aluminium demand analysis and work with our consultancy business on periodic projects.
- Contribute towards the enhancement of our regular products in collaboration with the rest of the Aluminium team and the wider Metals and Mining organisation.
- Work closely with colleagues in other Research sector groups including but not limited to Energy Transition Practice to help shape the company’s integrated view.
- Provide our client base with concise, timely and insightful analysis of key industry trends and events
- Establish and maintain contacts within the Aluminium industry stakeholders to acquire proprietary data and knowledge.
- Develop and maintain productive relationships with industry contacts and research clients, including presentation to clients via various deliverables, necessitating international travel.
- Effectively communicate analysis findings to clients through written deliverables, webcalls, podcasts, conferences and face-to-face presentations. Participate in supporting sales and marketing activities including events
- Respond to client enquiries and ad hoc requests in a timely and professional manner

About You
- Degree-qualified in a relevant discipline (e.g. Mining/ Geology/ Metallurgical Engineering or Economics/ Business etc.),
- Detailed knowledge of aluminium and the wider metals industry.
- Proven numerical analytic capabilities, including problem solving and technical skills in Excel.
- Presentation experience.
- An ability to write concisely and drawing out key points.
- Strong organisation and planning skills plus the ability to manage own workload
- The ability to work as part of a team which may involve multiple locations and time zones
- A willingness to travel to other company and client offices, and undertake industry site visits
- A strong commitment to commercial excellence and meeting the high-quality standards expected by our clients
Expectations
- We are a hybrid working company and the successful applicant will be expected to be physically present in the office at least 2 days per week to foster and contribute to a collaborative environment, but this may be subject to change in the future.
- Due to the global nature of the team, a degree of flexible working will be required to accommodate different time zones.
- Able to work in a global and virtual environment as the team is based in multiple locations.
- Independent contributor and self-starter as this role may be the only person on Aluminium in the location.
- Collaborative with multiple stakeholders across business segments such as technology and consulting.
